2005 USQA FINAL WORLD RANKINGS LIST

2004 USQA WORLD QUOIT CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL RANKINGS LIST

The USQA Annual World Rankings is a list of ranked players who have competed in the Playoff Round of one or more events in the annual USQA National Quoit Tour.  This list is published at the end of each season, and is compiled using a scoring system which awards points to those teams or individual players able to advance to the Playoffs in any or all of the tournaments in the Tour.

The Annual World Rankings is a INDIVIDUAL PLAYER ranking;  each team member or singles player who advances to a Tournament Playoff will earn a certain point-score which will increase in value if they progress through the playoff rounds.  All point-scores earned by each player from the events they participated in are added together for a Total Points value for that player.  The Total Points are then graded against all other eligible playoff participants from that  year's Tour.    NOTE:  Any reference here to "team" or  "teams" also infers the individual team members or any singles player.

The USQA Point Championship Awards.  Beginning in 2006, a portion of the entry fee from all tournaments in the National Tour will be set aside in a pool to be awarded as prize money to the top 8 finishing players in the World Rankings.  This will be known as the Point Championship Awards.  The prize money will be awarded on a percentage basis, decreasing in amount from the 1st to the 8th finisher.

How the Points are Tallied

In order to devise a fair ranking system which takes in consideration ALL aspects of a team or individual tournament performance,

The USQA has adopted a point-system determined with a simple mathematical formula.  This system includes Pool Play performance, number of rounds won in the playoffs, and final finish positions in its formula.  All teams that compete in the Playoffs are awarded their point-scores based on the following criteria:

  1. Each team advancing to the Playoffs is awarded an initial point-score based on the total number of teams participating in that tournament.   Thus, teams reaching the Playoffs in larger tournaments are capable of earning more possible points than those in smaller tournaments; the initial points they earn directly correspond to the amount of competition overcome in any given tournament.  This initial score is awarded in an inverse order based on each team's seeded position after Pool Play:

  • If 80 teams started the tournament in Pool Play, and 64 teams move on to a Playoff, the initial point-score would begin at 80 points for the #1 seeded team and decrement by one for each consecutive team, in decreasing order, through the last team making the playoffs:

             #1 seed = 80 points, #2 seed = 79 points, #3 seed = 78 points . . . . . #63 seed = 18 points, #64 seed = 17 points

The point-score for any particular seed would then be:  ( Number of Teams in Tournament +1 ) - Seed Number

  1. Then, for each round of playoffs a team wins, an additional 5 points is awarded to their initial point-score.
  1. After the Playoffs are complete, an additional 10 bonus points is awarded to the second-place finishing team, and an additional 20 bonus points is awarded to the Championship team. This added bonus is meant specifically to reward the two teams able to "tough it out" all the way to the final round, and widens the point differential between the top few positions for more realistic Ranking spreads.
  1. The Point-scores earned in each tournament in the Annual Tour are then added together for a Total Points value for each team.  Since the World Rankings is an individual ranking, This value is awarded to each of the two players on the team.

  • Teams playing in more tournaments and reaching more playoffs may finish the season with a higher cumulative Total Points than those teams finishing much higher in specific tournaments but not participating in all four events or not making all possible playoffs.
  • Individuals who pitch in multiple tournament playoffs but with different partners for each tournament are still awarded their point-scores individually and so will have a different Total Point value at the end of the season than any of their partners.
How the Point Championship Payouts are Determined
The USQA Point Championship Awards were added to the National Tour in 2006.  This Point Championship is designed to be a major incentive for teams and players to participate in ALL of the Tour events, in order to collect the highest amount of points.  Cash Prize Awards will be handed out to the 8 players who have collected the most Total Points in the Annual World Rankings.  To facilitate these awards, five dollars from the entry fee of each 2-person team in the Doubles Tournaments and  five dollars from each player in the Singles Championship will be set aside in a money pool and will be awarded at the end of the season as The Point Championship Awards.   The pool will be divided on a percentage basis by place, rounded to the nearest $10,  and distributed between the top eight point-holders, as illustrated in the table on the left below.  For an example of the payout process, A typical attendance figure for each tournament was chosen and values were calculated from the total number of entries for the season.  The actual calculated payouts are listed in the table on the right.
