The USQA Quoit Grounds at Hickory Park Campground, Gilbertsville, PA Where are most USQA Events held? The new USQA Quoit Grounds are located inside the scenic, semi-wooded Hickory Park Campground just a few miles east of Boyertown and Gilbertsville, in the tiny village of Layfield. The campground is situated along the short, quarter-mile stretch of asphalt where Routes 73 and 663 merge to a single 2-lane road then split back apart from each other. The Campground features a large, level field area with available space for up to 60 or more pairs of quoit pits, and a large pavilion with fireplace is adjacent to the site. The total number of pits constructed for each Tournament will be determined by the number of registered teams participating. A field of 90 2-person teams would require 30 sets of pits; Singles tournaments may require the construction of even more pits.

The Tournament What format do USQA tournaments follow?
Guaranteed 10 Games of Pool Play. Every team will pitch 10 round-robin games against opposing teams within their Division, and will complete all 10 games in Pool Play even if the team loses all ten matches. The number of teams in a division may vary, so teams may play some division teams twice or not at all. Seed positions for the playoffs are then determined for qualifying teams, which are calculated from the number of wins and the differential point total from all their games. The seeded teams within each division will go on to compete in the playoffs.
Best-of-Three Elimination During all Playoff Rounds! All tournaments in the USQA National Quoit Tour will use a Best-of-Three-Game format for all rounds of the playoffs. With an 8 AM tournament start and a 10-game Pool Play, the playoffs should still be able to complete by early evening. Electric Lighting will be available for any games that run past dusk. |

The Pits Why are the Pits in Dirt Instead of Soft Clay? Most Events in the USQA National Quoit Tour require the construction of at minimum 20-30 pairs of quoit pits (40-60 pits). Because of the large number of pits involved, and because the Quoit Ground property is not owned by the USQA, it is currently not feasible to construct and maintain a vast number of regulation wooden pit boxes filled with clay. The pits at the Grounds are instead formed directly on the ground by removing the sod, exposing bare areas of topsoil for game play. Additional topsoil material is always available for pit maintenance between tournament rounds. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Be aware that pitching in dirt can be quite different than pitching in soft, well-maintained clay, so participants are hereby notified that they should arrive at all USQA events properly prepared and fully expecting to pitch into dirt pits in their existing condition on tournament day, whether the soil is soft, hard, moist, muddy, dry, or even frozen. Weather conditions throughout the day may create different pit conditions at different times of the day. Some maintenance may be allowed between rounds to help alleviate excessively adverse pit conditions. ALL participants shall be considered at the same advantage or disadvantage during the Event. |
